New Jersey Fights In The Civil War

In keeping with the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the American Civil War, the Mahwah Museum opened an exciting exhibit, “New Jersey Fights in the Civil War – Remembering Soldiers Buried in Mahwah.”  This exhibit, which opened in March 2012, closed on January 2, 2013.   If you were not able to visit, see the limited edition book based on the exhibit. click here.

During the war, New Jersey regiments were engaged in every major battle and many of the soldiers were wounded or made the ultimate sacrifice.  The exhibit is focused on the experiences of  New Jersey soldiers during the struggle:  how they lived and trained, where and how they fought.  Also illustrated is the important part that women and children played in this war between the North and the South.  

Of special interest: the identification and location of twenty-eight Civil War soldiers buried in three of Mahwah’s cemeteries, Ramapo Reformed Church Cemetery, Mahwah Cemetery, and Redeemer Cemetery, and information about each one, the units he was enlisted in, and the actions and events in which he was engaged. 

The Museum is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5 p.m.  The museum is located at 201 Franklin Turnpike, Mahwah, NJ.
