Women on the Move:
Tales of Bicycles, Bi-Planes & Big Cars
Presented by – Carol Greene & Lindsey Greene Barrett
Thursday May 9 at 7:30
Following the bicycle, the development of automobiles and airplanes in the early 1900s incited a rush of spirited individuals seeking adventure and competing to set time and distance records. Women, as well as men, climbed into the driver’s seat or the cockpit and risked danger for the challenges and thrills of motoring and flying. Lindsey Greene Barrett and Carol Greene will highlight early women pioneers like Alice Huyler Ramsey of Hackensack, NJ, first woman to drive coast-to-coast in 1909; Harriet Quimby, first woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1911; and Beryl Markham, first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1936 from east to west. Barrett and Greene will discuss the independent personalities of these unusual women, and will show the fashions worn in their exciting pursuits.
